How Steamy is the Sex Scene in Elton John Biopic 'Rocketman?'

Friday May 31, 2019

"What steamy sex scene?"

That was the response by someone who watched the special Fandango screening of "Rocketman" on Saturday about the sex scene between Taron Egerton and Richard Madden in the Elton John biopic, due out on May 31.

"I have seen far steamier on FX show," he explained. "Believe me. It's no 'Blue is the Warmest Color.'"

The scene in question has Elton John (Egerton) and his manager (Reid) in stripping down and hopping in bed. It is being called by, as reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph, to be "as the first major studio film to depict a male gay sex scene on screen.

"The scene includes nudity, kissing and stimulated oral-sex between the two men — areas that studios have traditionally shied away from," the Independent reports.

The film has received a "R" rating in the United States and a 15 certificate in the UK.

Egerton, who describes himself as straight, explained to the Hollywood Reporter about the scene: "Everyone is obsessed with it. ... For me, kissing a man onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman onscreen. I'm not in any way repulsed by the male form. It's an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you're with — it makes no difference as to your sexual preference."

The film is being compared to "Bohemian Rhapsody," the Freddie Mercury biopic that has grossed more than $900 million worldwide, but shied away from depicting Mercury's sex life (save for a few kisses).

"Studios can be reluctant to feature gay sex scenes, in part, because it will disqualify a film from release in China, thereby limiting financial prospects. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' edited out suggestions of Mercury's homosexuality to secure release in the country," wrote report in The Telegraph.
