Artist Chella Man’s Medium is Gender Fluid
Timothy Rawles READ TIME: 19 MIN.
Chella Man is a “Deaf, transmasculine, genderqueer, Chinese, Jewish” artist. Their works are primarily based on language and how it’s used in oppressing society’s marginalized communities. You may recognize Man from their role as Jericho in the DC Universe movie “Titans.” They also wrote their first book called Continuum in 2021. At 19, after experiencing gender dysphoria throughout their childhood, Man began their transition. Now they use their creative mind to make art works not just on canvas, but on their skin. They consider their tattoos just as important as their transitioning scars which like ink, are also totems of their life experiences. “They symbolize how far I come,” said Man to The Advocate . “The fact that I'm still alive, what this means for my future, and who I am now. So I consider them tattoos.” Man is sizzling hot. Perhaps they don’t focus on that too much, but there’s no denying it when you see their Instagram feed. Facial hair, small wisps of fringe that hang over their forehead, and those piercing hazel eyes are lustrous. And let’s not forget that beaming smile. They might be creating existential art that chronicles their divine journey through life and what they feel on the inside, but we also love the beauty that shines so handsomely exposed on the outside.
