Popular Androgynous Model Comes Out as Trans

Andreja Pejic, an Australian model who first made international headlines as Andrej Pejic in 2010 for an androgynous look, announced Thursday night she is transgender, the Washington Post reports.

Pejic is known for her versatile look, allowing her to strut down the runway in both men's and women's clothing. She stands at 6-foot 1-inch and started her career walking for high fashion designers like Marc Jacobs John Paul Gaultier. Pejic, 22, has also graced the pages of fashion magazines like Vogue in men's and women's clothes but revealed she will only wear womenwear and that her name is now Andreja.

According to Jezebel, Pejic and her team are working with GLAAD as she makes a the public, professional and social transitions.

"To all trans youth out there, I would like to say respect yourself and be proud of who you are," Pejic said in a GLAAD statement. "All human beings deserve equal treatment no matter their gender identity or sexuality. To be perceived as what you say you are is a basic human right."

She also took to her Facebook and posted a selfie to her fans with the following message:

"As a transgender woman I hope to show that after transition (a life-saving process) one can be happy and successful in their new chapter."
GLAAD gives some more background information on the model and writes:

Pejic has received international attention modeling men's and women's collections on runways and in ad campaigns. She began modeling in 2007, and since then has been named to the Out 100 and received a NewNowNext award for style. She has been on the covers of Elle, New York, and many more, and walked the biggest international runways. In 2013, she co-starred in David Bowie's music video, 'The Stars are Out Tonight,' alongside Tilda Swinton.
