After being spotted together on and off over the past few months, singer Sam Smith and designer Christian Cowan have officially come out as a couple at the Met Gala of all places, and we can think of no bigger platform for the occasion.
Speaking to the New York Times, Cowan said that the pair wanted to speak to the theme of the night, "the tone that Anna loves, but also to our own story."
That theme was flowery love. And according to Cowan, he gifted the Grammy Award-winning Smith a metal-plated rose dipped in silver early on in their relationship.
That sentiment carried over into their looks for the "Garden of Time" dress code.
Smith and Cowan noticeably rocked metal-dipped red roses on their jackets that were "electroplated in 24-karat gold and sterling silver," NYT reports.
Per Cowan, he was further inspired by Oscar Wilde to create their dapper looks.
"There was an austereness to his suiting, and there was also a romance that I really was drawn to," he said.
And the rose elements are functional, said Cowan. "It's a functional closure," he said. "We can pull it out and pull it in, which I think is fun."
Coming together with their looks was very collaborative gushed Cowan. "And because we're partners, I do know Sam," he said. "So it's nice to be able to design something for someone you know intimately."
