Gaga Reveals How She Changed Her Singing Style for 'Joker: Folie à Deux' Role

Lady Gaga brought her voice to the task of playing super-baddie Harley Quinn in the forthcoming "Joker" sequel "Folie à Deux," The Hollywood Reporter relays.
Referring to her character as "Lee" – evidently a shortened form of the name "Harley" – Gaga, in remarks made to Empire Magazine for a cover feature on the film, said that she "worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee and to not come from me as a performer."
Part of that, she added, was a matter of making the movie's musical passages "an extension of the dialogue, as opposed to breaking into song for no conceivable reason" – a comment that may shed some light on just how "musical" the new movie is going to be. Trailers released thus far have shown snippets of what look like big dance numbers.
Saying that Lee's musical renditions are full of "plenty of bum notes," the "Bad Romance" singer told the publication, "I'm a trained singer, right? So even my breathing was different when I sang as Lee.
"When I breathe to sing onstage, I have this very controlled way to make sure that I'm on pitch, and it's sustained at the right rhythm and amount of time," Gaga went on to explain, "but Lee would never know how to do any of that. So it's like removing the technicality of the whole thing, removing my perceived art form from it all and completely being inside of who she is."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, her performances for the film were "unlike anything I've ever done before," Gaga disclosed.
The sequel, due out in October, "sees failed comedian Arthur Fleck ([Joaquin] Phoenix) meet the love of his life, Harley Quinn (Gaga), while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital," THR thumbnailed the upcoming film's plot. "Once he's released, the duo embark on a doomed romantic misadventure."
Fans are wondering about more than the exact nature of the musically-inclined feature; for instance, how will Harley Quinn be portrayed?
"In Gaga's hands, get ready for an all-new take on a fan-favorite character," Empire Magazine enthused. "Lee is both the Harley Quinn you know, and one you really don't."
Director Todd Phillips, who was also the creative force behind 2019's "Joker," told "Empire" that "it's really Gaga's own interpretation," along with that of himself and his co-writer, Scott Silver, and compared this version of Quinn to Charles Manson and other charismatic, notorious killers.
"There are things about Harley in the movie that were taken from the comic books," Phillips teased, "but we took it and molded it to the way we wanted it to be."
