Watch: It's Magic, Music, and Mayhem as Trailer Drops for 'Wicked: For Good'

A dishonest head of state using the levers of government to attack a vulnerable minority. The citizens of a nation being fed disinformation to weaponize them against a blameless target. It's hard to picture, isn't it? But it's the basic storyline for the second half of "Wicked," the epic two-part movie adaptation of the phenomenal stage musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwarz, and now there's a thrilling trailer that offers a glimpse at how director Jon M. Chu is bringing the rest of the sprawling story to cinematic life.

Part One of "Wicked" came out last year and was instantly a global smash success. Queer audiences embraced the film, along with the misunderstood, courageous heroine at its heart: green-skinned Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), an extraordinarily powerful witch who finds herself forced, due to the strength of her convictions, to stand up against a plot to unite the citizens of Oz by turning them against the marginalized community of talking animals, all in a bid to elevate the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) and consolidate his power. As fascism grows and talking animals are driven from public life, Elphaba falls in love with the handsome Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). Her gorgeous rival, Galinda (Ariana Grande) – who is also drawn to Fiyero – becomes her best friend.

But Galinda and Fiyero end up being drawn into the corrupt political machinations of the so-called wizard (in truth, nothing more than a power-hungry carnival hustler), a populist who is cynically supported by corrupt enablers. Among them is Miss Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), the headmistress of Elphaba, Galinda, and Fiyero's alma mater, Shiz University.

"Wicked: For Good" continues the story: Galinda (now a celebrity who has shortened her name to the more glamourous-sounding Glinda) is a government spokesperson; Elphaba's sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), is so desperately in love with former schoolmate Boq (Ethan Slater) that she basically keeps him prisoner and, to do so, deprives his entire people, the Munchkins, of their civil rights. Meanwhile, the Wizard, together with Morrible, launches a steady flow of vicious lies and slanders directed at Elphaba, painting her as an enemy of the people for her defiance.

"New vocals for both witches underscore the trailer," Entertainment Weekly noted, "beginning with Erivo's rendition of Elphaba's power ballad, 'No Good Deed Goes Unpunished,' and ending with both Erivo and Grande's take on the moving duet, 'For Good,'" one of the musical's most popular numbers and the source of the film's subtitle.

The clip also shows Dorothy and her trio of famous friends – the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion (the latter rendered as a CGI creation).

"If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences," EW recalled Chu saying in a previous interview. "Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn't what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard."
